Key point:

Protective film should be selected for the actual surface and the complete use cycle. A practical trial before serial implementation is the safest approach.

Where does selection start?

With the surface. It is not enough to know whether the substrate is steel, aluminium, glass, laminate or plastic. Surface finish also matters: gloss, matt, texture, paint, decorative coating and surface preparation.

A film that performs correctly on one substrate may have the wrong adhesion on another.

1. Adhesive type and adhesion level

Depending on the solution, acrylic, rubber-based or hybrid adhesives and different adhesion levels may be used. The objective is enough holding power during the process while still allowing safe removal under the intended conditions.

2. Protection time

Define whether the film remains on the surface for hours, days, weeks or throughout production, transport and installation. Long application periods can create different requirements from short inter-operation protection.

3. Temperature and environment

Application and removal temperature, storage, sunlight, humidity and other conditions can influence the film–adhesive–surface system. Unusual conditions should be stated in the enquiry.

4. Thickness, width and winding

Selection also covers the base film: thickness, width, matt or glossy finish and winding on a core. Parameters should suit the application process — manual or machine — and the geometry of the protected component.

5. Why is a practical trial important?

The real surface may differ from its catalogue description through coating method, surface energy, roughness, process residues or prior treatment. Before serial production, the film should therefore be tested on the actual material through the expected application and removal cycle.

Common mistakes

  • selecting only by substrate name,
  • not stating the surface finish,
  • omitting the required protection time,
  • not stating application or removal temperature,
  • implementing a large batch without a prior trial.

What should the enquiry include?

Surface material and finish, expected protection time, application method, storage and transport conditions, dimensions, required thickness and approximate quantity. A surface photograph and material sample can also help.
