“ESD film” is a starting description, not a complete specification. Selection should be based on the protected product, packaging method and process requirements.
Why do electrostatic charges matter?
Electrostatic charges can arise when materials contact, rub or separate. In electronics and some sensitive components, a discharge may damage the product or increase process risk.
For this reason, ESD packaging selection should consider more than bag size or film thickness. The required protective function also needs to be understood.
1. What is being packed?
Start with the product: a finished device, PCB, component, subassembly or an item used later in a process. Its sensitivity and any requirements defined by the end customer may be relevant.
2. What does the full process look like?
The packaging may be used only inside one plant, in storage, between sites or throughout the supply chain. Describe where the item is packed, how long it remains packed and what operations take place along the way.
3. Are electrical or standards requirements defined?
If the customer or end user requires defined electrical properties, resistance ranges or compliance with a specific standard, include these requirements in the enquiry. The word “antistatic” should not be treated as a substitute for a complete technical requirement.
You do not need to know every technical term when making the first enquiry. If a requirements document exists, sending it is usually the best approach.
4. Format, dimensions and closure
As with other technical films, packaging format, dimensions, thickness and quantity matter. Depending on the application, a bag, tubing or another execution may be required.
5. Storage and transport conditions
Describe any special exposure. Storage time, transport method, contact with other materials and procedures used in an ESD-protected area can all be relevant.
Common enquiry mistakes
- asking only for “ESD film” without describing the product,
- omitting end-customer requirements,
- not explaining packaging and transport,
- assuming every film labelled ESD has identical properties.
What should be sent for selection?
Ideally: product description, packaging method, dimensions, approximate quantity and — where available — electrical requirements, standards or the customer's specification. A sample of the film currently used can also be useful.
